City Begins Appointment Process to Replace Councilman Agne - 1/2/12

Applications are now available to fill the remainder of Councilman Agne's vacated seat on the City Council.  Per City Charter, the Council must fill the position within 30 days.  Accordingly, the application deadline is 6p January 9, 2012.  The City Council will make a formal appointment at its January 16th meeting.  If you are interested in applying for the position, please click here and fill out an application.  Applications should be returned to the City Manager's Office.

 

Longtime Councilman Dave Agne Passes Away - 12/25/11

Councilman Dave Agne passed away on Christmas Day at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.  Dave was first elected to the Council in 2001, and has been a longtime supporter of the City of Springfield and its residents.  The Council will discuss the process to fill Councilman Agne's position at its January 3rd meeting.

 

Public Hearing Set to Finalize Farmers Market Project - 12/21/11

The Springfield City Council will take public comments at it's January 3, 2012 meeting as part of CDBG requirements to formally close out the project.  The City used $150,000 in CDBG funds and $90,000 in TIFA D funds to complete the improvements.

 

City Offices to Close for Christmas and New Years - 12/15/11

City Hall will be closed Thursday, December 22th through Monday December 26th in observance of the Christmas holiday.  City Hall will also be closed from noon Thursday, December 29th through Monday, January 2nd in observance of the New Year's holiday.

 

Farmers Market to Close for Christmas; Will Reopen January 7th - 12/1/11

The Farmers Market will be closed for the next two Saturdays in observance of Christmas and New Years.

 

City Offices to Close for Thanksgiving - 11/11/11

The City Offices will be Closed Thursday, November 24th and will reopen Monday, November 28th.

 

Special Holiday Market Planned; What-A-Do Actors to Perform - 11/7/11

The Third-Annual Holiday Market will take place from 8a to 1p at the Farmers Market on Saturday, November 26th.  There will be a special performance of the cast of What-A-Do Theatre's upcoming "Christmas Schooner" performance.  

 

Farmers Market to Continue Year-Round! - 9/5/11

The Springfield Farmers Market recently announced winter hours that will include being open Saturday mornings from 11a to 3p!  Winter hours will be in effect beginning in November and running through April. We hope to see you there!

 

Community Kitchen is Ready to Go - 8/5/11

The Springfield Community Kitchen, unveiled last month as the Southwest Michigan Food Innovation Center is open and ready for users.  The Center is designed to facilitate food-related businesses get started and find affordable kitchen space.  The Center is great for caterers, bakers, inventors, educators, and food demonstrators.  The space is very flexible, and can accommodate most users.  Check out their website here

 

Car and Craft Show Coming - 8/1/11

PulverDryer, USA announces move to Springfield - 7/1/11

PulverDryer, USA, a Kalamazoo-based company that does business throughout the world has announced that they will occupy the former Robert's Packaging building on Avenue C.  The property consists of approximately 100,000 sf of industrial and office space.  PulverDryer is a green technology company that helps large corporations get the most out of their waste products.  PulverDryer intends to operate their world headquarters, research & development facilities, and manufacturing facilities in Springfield.  The company will employ more than 100.  Welcome to Springfield!

City Receives $4,500 Grant to Help Low Income Residents Enjoy The Market - 2/9/11

The City of Springfield was granted $2,400 from the Fair Food Network's Double Up Food Bucks program. This program will allow members of the public that have EBT or Bridge Cards to receive double the service at the Springfield Farmers Market!  Now, you can buy $40 worth of fresh produce and other eligible items for only $20!  Please contact Kris Vogel at 965-2354 to learn more - or visit the market this season.

 

City Offices to Close in Observance of President's Day - 2/7/11

City offices will be closed Monday, February 21st in recognition of President's Day.  The offices will reopen Tuesday, February 22nd at 7:00a.  The City Council meeting will be held Tuesday at 7:30p.

 

Farmer's Market Kitchen Expansion Preliminary Plans Unveiled - 1/25/11

The City's architect has completed the initial draft of the kitchen expansion project at the Farmer's Market.  The project, which will add nearly 800 sf of kitchen space, heated common areas, and help provide a sense of place at the market, should be completed by mid May.  Check out the plans here!

 

FY 2009-10 Audit is Complete - 12/30/10

The City's independent auditors have completed their review of our financial records for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2010.  A copy of the financial can be downloaded here; the auditors will make a formal presentation to the City Council on January 4th.  Our financial statements are usually completed in mid-October, but this year the completion date was moved back nearly two months to provide time for the City to complete an actuarial study of our other post employment benefits (OBEP) - health insurance costs for current and future retirees.  As in years past, the City received a clean audit opinion for FY 09-10.  Please take a few minutes to review the audit and/or tune into access vision (channel 17) January 4th at 7:30 to watch the formal presentation.

City offices will be closed Thursday, December 23rd in recognition of Christmas.  The offices will reopen Monday, December 27th.  The offices will also close Monday, January 3rd in recognition of New Years Day.  The offices will reopen Tuesday, January 4th, and the City Council meeting will take place later that evening.  Enjoy the holidays!

City offices will be closed Thursday, November 25th in recognition of Thanksgiving.  The offices will reopen Monday, November 29th.

City offices will be closed Thursday, November 11th in recognition of Veterans Day.  The offices will reopen Monday, November 15th - The Council meeting scheduled for the 15th will take place as planned.  Please take some time to thank our veteran for their service!

 

Farmers Market to Benefit from Farm to Food Grant - 11/1/10

The City of Springfield has received preliminary notice from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation that our request for $150,000 to add a commercial grade kitchen to the Farmers Market has been approved.  The City will invest an additional $82,500 to complete the project.  The is an exciting addition to our market!!

 

Springfield Awarded Parks Grant - 10/26/10

The City of Springfield has received preliminary notice from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment that our request for $30,000 to develop a neighborhood park in the Heights Neighborhood has been approved.  The City will invest an additional $30,000 to complete the project.  The park will be located along 27th Street, north of Wellworth; we expect the park to be open to the public by June 2011. 

 

Street Work on New Moon Terrace Wraps Up - 10/21/10

The reconstruction work on New Moon Terrace has been completed.  The approximately $240,000 project was funded via a federal grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.  We are grateful for their investment in our community!

 

Halloween Unchanged in Springfield - 10/5/10

The City of Springfield does not regulate trick-or-treating activities.  Accordingly, parents should plan on celebrating Halloween on Sunday, October 31st from 5p to 8p. 

 

Wednesday Markets to End - 9/29/10

The Springfield Farmers Market will continue through the month of October with Saturday market hours only.  Each year, we end Wednesday markets hours on the last Wednesday in September.  Please continue to enjoy the market through the month of October.

 

Farmers Market to Double Up EBT Purchases - 9/3/10

Thanks to a generous gift from the Battle Creek Community Foundation, for the remainder of the season, for every $2.00 you spend at the market with your EBT or Bridge Card, we will give you an additional $2.00!!  You can double up to $20.00 per day!  Come on out and get your affordable, fresh produce.

 

City's 8th Annual Car and Craft Show This Saturday - 8/30/10

Our car and craft show is planned for September 4th from 8a to 3p.  Come out and enjoy the festivities!  Live entertainment will include Clifford Babcock Blues Band, Ellery Rose, DJ Mike Throckmorton, Master Hee Kwan Lee's KMA Demonstration Team, the Battle Creek Barbershop Quartet, and much more.  55 BBQ and Del Rae's.    

 

New Moon Terrace Construction to Begin - 8/23/10

The City's contractor will begin work on the New Moon Terrace Reconstruction Project this week.  Please keep an eye out for notices dealing with mail delivery during certain portions of the construction.

 

New Moon Terrace Reconstruction Bids are in - 8/10/10

The Public Works Department open four sealed bids this morning for the construction work on New Moon Terrace.  The project, which had an original construction estimate of $335,000, received a low bid of $240,000.  The bids are under review and will likely be reviewed at the August 16th City Council meeting.  The project is expected to formally begin later this month.  70% of the project cost will be funded via Federal CDBG funding.

 

Hap Ki Do Championships Coming to Town - 8/4/10

The World Hap Ki Do Championships are coming to Kellogg Arena this weekend.  Don't miss the opening ceremonies this evening - they start at 7p.  Grand Master He Kwan Lee, a Springfield business owner (Korean Martial Arts on Goguac St) organized the event and helped make its appearance in Battle Creek possible.  This is the first time in the history of the Championship that the event was held outside of Asia.  Congratulations and Thank you is due to Grand Master Lee.  Please take some time to enjoy the events, which will feature breaking, sparing, open hand technique, and other Hap Ki Do events.

 

Springfield Unveils New Website - 8/4/10

The City of Springfield unveiled it's new website on August 4th.  The new site was designed by City Manager Peterson over the course of approximately 4 weeks.  It is the City's expectation that the new site will help make the City more accessible and help city staff and the City Council improve communication with the public.

 

8th Annual Car Show Ready to Rock! - 7/24/10

The 8th Annual Car and Craft Show at the Farmers Market is scheduled for September 4th from 8a to 2p.  We expect more than 300 cars and more than 50 craft show vendors.  Live entertainment is being organized by Ellery Rose.

 

Springfield Receives $245,000 for Street Improvements - 7/14/10

The City of Springfield recently secured $245,000 in CDBG funding through the MEDC to reconstruct New Moon Terrace, improve storm sewers in the area, and add curbs/gutters.  The City will provide a $105,000 match.

 

Springfield Receives $75,000 for Dump Truck - 7/14/10

The City of Springfield was awarded a $75,000 grant for the purchase of a dump truck.  The City will provide a $45,000 match to the federal grant.

 

PSO Dan Hillman Receives Above and Beyond Award - 7/1/10

The Battle Creek Public School Board has awarded PSO Dan Hillman with the prestigious Above and Beyond award for his work at Valley View Elementary and Springfield Middle School.  Dan is an asset to our community and to our schools.  Good work PSO Hillman!

 

Springfield Receives $424,000 for Street Improvements - 5/10/10

The City of Springfield is conducting resurfacing projects in the Heights and West Lake Woods neighborhoods thanks to a $424,000 grant from the MEDC.  The City will provide approximately $106,000 in local matching funds toward the project.

 

Springfield Receives $18,000 Grant to Purchase Two Police Cruisers - 3/25/10

Thanks to a USDA Community Facilities Grant, the City of Springfield has received $18,000 to purchase a 2010 Ford Crown Victoria and a 2010 Ford Expedition.  The City will provide $33,000 toward the purchase.
