Pistol Purchase Permit

Pistol Purchase Permit:

Purchasing a pistol or non-pistol (long gun) from a Federal Firearms License (FFL) Dealer:

Unless you possess a Michigan issued Conceal Pistol License (CPL) you do not need to obtain a License to Purchase (LTP) from any police agency in the State of Michigan before purchasing a pistol or non-pistol from a Federal Firearms License (FFL) Dealer. They will provide you with a Pistol Sales Record (RI-060) at the time of the purchase.

Purchasing a pistol or non-pistol (long gun) from an individual:

Unless you possess a Michigan issued Conceal Pistol License (CPL) when purchasing a pistol or non-pistol from an individual you will need to obtain a License to Purchase (LTP) from any police agency in the State of Michigan. At Springfield Department of Public Safety, you will need to complete an application and will be subject to a criminal background investigation to verify eligibility to obtain a License to Purchase (LTP). Under most circumstances an LTP can be issued the same day of application. There is no fee associated with obtaining a License to Purchase (LTP) from Springfield Department of Public Safety. Conceal Pistol License (CPL) holders will complete the transaction with the individual using a Pistol Sales Record (RI-060) at the time of purchase.

Inherited a pistol or non-pistol (long gun):

If you inherited a pistol or non-pistol you will need to obtain a License to Purchase (LTP) from any police agency in the State of Michigan unless you possess a Michigan issued Conceal Pistol License (CPL). You will follow the same procedure and be subject to the same requirements as if purchasing a pistol or non-pistol from an individual. Conceal Pistol License (CPL) holders will complete the transaction with a Pistol Sales Record (RI-060) at the time of transfer.

Moved to Michigan and need to register your pistol or non-pistol (long gun):

If you move to Michigan with a pistol or non-pistol, you will need to obtain a License to Purchase (LTP) and be subject to the same requirements as purchasing a pistol from an individual.

Requirements to obtain a License to Purchase (LTP):

  • Must reside in Michigan and show proof.
  • Must be 18 years old.
  • Must not have any State or Federal prohibitors.
