Pistol Purchase Permit
Purchasing a pistol from an FFL Dealer:
You do not need to obtain a License to Purchase (LTP) when purchasing a pistol from a FFL Dealer. They will issue you a permit at the time of the purchase.
Purchasing a pistol from an individual:
When purchasing a pistol from an individual you will need to obtain a LTP from any police agency in the State of Michigan. At Springfield Department of Public Safety you will need to complete an application and will be subject to a criminal background investigation to verify eligibility to obtain a LTP. Under most circumstances a LTP can be issued the same day of application. There is no fee associated with obtaining a LTP from Springfield Department of Public Safety.
Visit the Springfield Department of Public Safety office, Monday – Thursday, 7:00 am – 5:30 pm, to obtain an LTP. (Administration office is closed on Fridays)
Inherited a pistol:
If you inherited a pistol you will need to obtain a LTP from any police agency in the State of Michigan. You will follow the same procedure and be subject to the same requirements as if purchasing a pistol from an individual.
Moved to Michigan and need to register your pistol:
If you moved to Michigan and need to register your pistol you will need to obtain a LTP from any police agency in the State of Michigan. You will follow the same procedure and be subject to the same requirements as if purchasing a pistol from an individual.

Obtaining a permit to Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW):
CCW permits are issued through the Calhoun County Clerk’s office. For information on that process contact:
